Last year, I wrote a piece that was largely a means of expression for myself, and a small group of ensembles supported me. It was the first time I had written for band in the grade 5/6 level in a long time. I submitted the piece, named “Spark and Fire,” to the Red Note Music Festival Competition (large ensemble), and I received notification that it had made it into the top ten finalists. I’ve applied to many contests and received numerous rejection emails. While I didn’t win or receive runner-up in this particular contest, even a small amount of recognition for the work I put into this piece means a lot to me. Take the small personal wins when you can, and celebrate the process of continuing to grow. Congratulations to Daniel Kim, Scott Lee, and all the other participants. I am constantly inspired by the amazing artists around me every day.
